Fadi Halabi: President, Duracite & Board Chair, Solano WDB
How did you first learn about the WDB and why did you join the Board?
I was introduced to the WDB by former Board Chair Brian Chikowski. He recommended that I become a member. I joined the Board because I wanted to understand what we as a community were doing to help dislocated workers and youth find employment and resources. After developing a keen understanding of what the WDB contributes to the community I knew it was an organization that I wanted to be a part of.
What prompted you to become the Board Chair?
Prior to becoming the Chair I served as many officers including the Executive Committee Member-At-Large, Treasurer and Vice Chair. When there was a vacancy for Chair the nominating committee recommended me and I accepted.
How long have you served as a Board member?
I’ve served as a member since August 2002.
What do you think the WDB’s strength is?
One thing I can say about our organization is that we have great staff members that have made my job as a Board Chair easy and also the lives of our board members. We do the best job we can for the community. We have a very well-run organization. I’m very proud of our staff and to serve as the Board Chair.
Tell us about yourself and Duracite.
I’m originally from Jordan and grew up in Saudi Arabia. I came to the U.S. in 1984 and attended U.C. Berkeley and San Francisco State University where I studied Civil Engineering. I’ve only had one job in my entire life and it was by accident. One day while I was in college a friend asked me to help him for the afternoon at Duracite with an accounting program…and I never left! A few years later I bought the company and we grew from one location in Benicia with 15 employees to 22 locations throughout California with over 500 employees.
Duracite specializes in counter-tops, granite, soapstone and marble. Our headquarters are located in Fairfield.
I fly Cessna single engine aircrafts.
